What can the MacBook notch do? Apps that put it to work

By Aqib Javed · Updated Oct 12, 2026

On its own the MacBook notch only holds the camera, and macOS leaves the menu bar space around it empty. Notch apps draw a panel that drops out of the notch when you hover or press a shortcut. People use them for music controls, file drops, notes, a clipboard history like Notchet, and moving windows to another screen like DisplayShift.

What macOS does with the notch

Nothing beyond the camera. The menu bar flows around it, and on Macs with lots of menu bar icons some of them end up hidden behind it. There is no Dynamic Island on the Mac, so anything that appears from the notch comes from an app.

What notch apps can do

  • Music and media: now playing, play and pause, a small visualiser. Boring Notch is a popular free one.
  • A Dynamic Island style hub with widgets and notifications, such as NotchNook and Alcove.
  • File drop zones for AirDrop and sharing, notes, timers and even a terminal.
  • Clipboard history: Notchet keeps everything you copy in a shelf that drops out of the notch with Option Command V.
  • Monitors: DisplayShift opens from the notch when you plug in a display and moves the windows you tick.

How to pick one

  • Choose by the job you do every day, not by the animation. A notch app you open fifty times a day is worth more than one you look at.
  • Check it works on Macs without a notch too, if you use an external display or an older Mac. Notchet drops from the top centre of the screen there, and DisplayShift from a pill just under the menu bar.
  • Check what it does with your data. Notchet keeps your clipboard on your Mac and never uploads it.

Questions

Can you use the MacBook notch like a Dynamic Island?

Not with macOS alone, but apps such as NotchNook, Alcove and Boring Notch add a Dynamic Island style panel that drops out of the notch.

Do notch apps work on Macs without a notch?

Many do. On a Mac or display without a notch, Notchet opens from the top centre of the screen and DisplayShift from a pill just under the menu bar.

What is the most useful thing to put in the notch?

Something you reach for all day. For most people that is media controls or clipboard history, which is what Notchet puts there.
