Universal Clipboard not working between iPhone and Mac? How to fix it

By Aqib Javed · Updated Oct 10, 2026

Universal Clipboard needs both devices signed in to the same Apple Account, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi switched on, Handoff turned on, and the devices near each other. Wi-Fi has to be on even if your Mac uses Ethernet, because the two devices talk to each other directly. If all of that is right and it still fails, restart both devices: Continuity often gets stuck, and a restart is the fix that works most often.

Check what Universal Clipboard needs

  1. Both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account (System Settings, your name, on the Mac; Settings, your name, on the iPhone).
  2. Bluetooth is on for both.
  3. Wi-Fi is on for both. They don't need to join the same network, and the Mac can stay on Ethernet, but the Wi-Fi switch itself must be on.
  4. Handoff is on. On the Mac: System Settings, General, AirDrop & Handoff, then Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices. On the iPhone: Settings, General, AirPlay & Continuity (Handoff on older iOS).
  5. The devices are close together, and you paste within a minute or two: the copy only stays available for a short time.

If it still doesn't work

  • Restart both the iPhone and the Mac. Continuity can get stuck after updates or long uptimes, and this fixes it more often than anything else.
  • Turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on again on both devices.
  • Turn Handoff off and on again on both devices.
  • VPNs and network filters sometimes get in the way; try once with them off.
  • As a last resort, sign out of your Apple Account on one device and back in.

Keep your iPhone copies on the Mac

Universal Clipboard only holds one thing, briefly. Copy something else on either device and the iPhone copy is gone. A clipboard manager keeps it: Notchet saves what arrives from your iPhone or iPad with a phone badge, photos included, and keeps the photo even after macOS clears its short-lived copy (Save copies from your iPhone and iPad, in its settings). Press Option Command V on the Mac and it's there next to everything else you copied.

Questions

Does Universal Clipboard work if my Mac is on Ethernet?

Yes, as long as Wi-Fi is switched on. The iPhone and Mac exchange the copy directly over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so the Mac doesn't need to be on a Wi-Fi network, but its Wi-Fi can't be turned off.

How long does Universal Clipboard keep what I copied?

Only a short time, about a minute or two, and only the latest copy. A clipboard manager such as Notchet keeps it in your history for as long as you choose.

Can I paste iPhone photos on my Mac?

Yes, Universal Clipboard carries images too. Notchet keeps those photos in its history, so you can paste them later or drag them into any app.
